“For a hundred years or more the world, our world, has been dying. And not one man, in these last hundred years or so, has been crazy enough to put a bomb up the asshole of creation and set it off. The world is rotting away, dying piecemeal. But it needs the coup de grace, it needs to be blown to smithereens. Not one of us is intact, and yet we have in us all the continents and the seas between the continents and the birds of the air. We are going to put it down ― the evolution of this world which has died but which has not been buried.” ― Henry Miller, Tropic of Cancer

I think it is Rigor Sardonicus, at least their first album. That came out in 1988.

Any thoughts?

Good question. A lot of people say Thergothon others say Rigor Sardonicous. I don't know what I think. Rigor Sardonicous put their first demo out in 94 but so did Thergothon. Skepticism was around before both bands but they started life as a Death Metal band. But their first Doom demo was also out in 94. Odd that they all released material around the same time. Some people say Unholy is/was a Funeral band or one of the originators of the style. I say they're just Doom/Death. Raven (aka Shape of Despair) released their first material in 95. But Mournful Congregation put their first material out in 94 and their easily one of the slowest bands in existent but Esoteric (if you consider them Funeral, which I don't) they put their fist demo out in 93. Tough question.

Actually they formed in 1988, their first demo came out in 94 but their full length album didn't come out till 99. I would say Thergothon, their first demos came out in 91.

Their was a Swiss band called Mordor that released an album in 1990. I vaguely remember hearing it but it was a long time ago.

I don't consider them Funeral Doom metal. They had certain elements of funeral doom metal, but they had some drony elements, black metal elements, elements of what it would be latter called funeral doom metal... pretty weird and interesting band.

It is always hard to say which was the first band but Thergothon or Rigor Sardonicous, but I don't think it is that important who was the first one, it is more important who influenced more bands and Thergothon influenced most of funeral doom bands, while Rigor Sardonicous are more obscure band ( at least in Europe).

PS: I love historic doom metal topics like that.

I have always thought of bands like Thergothon, Funeral and Skepticism as being the first. They are certainly the first three that I ever heard. One band that gets overlooked for this topic is Mournful Congregation. They are credited as starting in 93 but they played live as early as 91. I know because I was there (Australia) at the time and it was funny but most people just got up and went into another bar when they played. No one had heard metal so slow at the time as even other doom metal bands didn't play that slow in the early 90's.

Yes but it was rare to a hear a band that slow. Most doom bands were still in Trouble mode, playing a lot of mid-tempos. I saw my first ever drone-doom band around that time too and I can't remember their name but they cleared the room within 2 songs lol.

lol!

I consider the first drone doom metal song Melvins: Eye Flys (released in 1986) and Earth released their demo in 1990, so they could be one of the first bands playing drone doom metal.

Honestly the first time I first heard drone, I think it was either Sunn 0))) or a Boris album, I thought it was a bit of a joke album, kind of like grind bands like Sore Throat. I didn't take it seriously at all so I was surprised years later when the whole drone scene emerged.

I must admit that I used to think drone was just the work of bedroom musicians, a computer and a Myspace page so when bands like Sunn 0))) started getting a loyal following, it was a surprise to me. I still don't know how anyone can listen to drone for more than an album's worth and even then an albums worth is a stretch.
