...leaning on the “holy shoit that guy sounds like Cookie Monster” style employed by some modern doom bands

scratch

Epic doom has a fairly decent following, mostly amongst Europeans and kids who shoot up schools.

affraid

But my vote for most awesome epic doom band ever goes to Doomsword. Check out this list of past and present Doomsword members: Deathmaster, The Forger, WrathLord, Sacred Heart, Nightcomer, The Guardian Angel, The Guardian Angel II and Dark Omen. I don’t care what they sound like, I’ll check out a band with names like that any day.

pig

This guy made me see the truth! I'll start downloading Lady Gaga albums right away...I was missing this beauty all this time.

lol! This is the kind of bullshit that really gets me mad, misinformed garbage from someone who is obviously trying to comment on a genre he knows nothing about. The obscure tag got me as the style is hardly obscure in the metal world.

The part about kids shooting up schools is the worst part of it, I can't think of one single doom-band that has ever been linked to murder.

I like how on the other genres he gives reasons the MUSIC is bad, but for epic doom metal all he says are band member names and a video. Nothing bad about the actual music. Nothing at all about the music, other than the singing isn't cookie monster. Hah.

Yeah and then he generalizes by picking on one band and makes out it is typical of the scene.

I can't really say that I'm surprised with what was in that article. Hipsters get scene points from being "ironic" and "witty", but to anyone who knows what they're talking about, it's pretty obvious where the idiocy lies. Worthless.

I avoided reading that link originally because I knew it was going to annoy me but what the hell. I agree fully with Jayke on this one. Articles like that make me ashamed to wear glasses, lol.

People never look at the big picture anyway. I once argued with a dude because it said doom was slow with hardly any changes. I then asked him what his favorite bands were and they were all grind so basically fast bands playing the same beat, same riff as fast as they can. I said to him, well there is hardly any changes in your music either. He paused....and said damn you are right ha ha.

People need to think before opening their mouth but also there is too many people claiming to know a lot when they know very little. It is like I wouldn't shoot my mouth off about modern black-metal as I just don't know enough about it so I keep my opinions to myself.

Also ha ha, I was on a last FM thread and someone thought Alice Cooper was doom-metal and this came from what appears to be a black metal fan. Shows you how underground doom-metal really is. lol!

Like I said, I know little but from what I hear that is exactly the truth. I sometimes get death/black metal CD's sent to me for review, I don't know why but they all sound the same to me.

That's one thing that Rick, our singer, has said to me several times. That too much of what's coming out now sounds the same. I'm really glad that technical proficiency is up in Death Metal, but its so sterile and soulless. Old tech death bands like: Death, Cynic, Atheist, etc... could not only write complex music but do so with feeling. They could write music not just showboat their scale practicing skills.

Well I work for Paragon Records that specializes in death, black metal stuff. I am not into the bands, I just do it cause I am good friends with the label owner. The thing is though, every release sounds the same. I would say out of the 40 or so albums on the label, only maybe 3 sound original or different. A lot of these bands are great players but can't write songs, it is just riffs slapped together with a cliched vocal over the top of it.
