Lol, I am listening to a Sabbath bootleg where they play the entire Paranoid album except for 'Planet Caravan' of course. Paranoid maybe overplayed and talked about but it still sounds pretty fresh for a 41 year old album._________________ http://www.doommantia.com |

I listened to it once, late last night. It didn't impress me but it wasn't terribly boring. The vocals annoyed me a lot of the time though. I've come to expect evil, unhuman sounding vocals from drone doom, and in this album the vocalist just sounded like a very, very angry Japanese man. I'll definitely give it another listen, though. |

Yeah I don't blame you for thinking that. Even though its my favorite Boris album, there is times where I can't get into it either but Boris have that effect on me anyway, I have to be in the mood for any of their albums._________________ http://www.doommantia.com |

I think you must be really in a special mood to listen drone doom bands. I can really enjoy some drone only on a special occasion like yesterday when I was really enjoying Boris. And it is the same with most Funeral Doom bands for me...

| Drone is a real specialized genre so it is really hard to get right. Most drone acts are really dull, like watching paint dry but when its done right, it can be captivating stuff but it is pure mood-music. It is not like you wake up and think, I get my day off to a good start with some drone. It is also not driving in the car music either. It is music for a certain mood at a certain place and time. For me it is usually 2 in the morning with headphones and I more or less meditate to it. _________________ http://www.doommantia.com |

While drone is one of my favorite types of doom so far (along with funeral),I agree that it's definitely not stuff you can get into any time. Last week I got the random idea of listening to Bathory Erzsebet by Sunn O))) at 4am, while reading the story of Countess Bathory by candlelight. As weird as it sounds, I loved it. If I try listening to drone when it's daylight, it just isn't the same. It has to be in candlelight or in total darkness.
Anyways, I discovered Wormphlegm today...someone on Youtube labeled it as "funeral drone", so naturally I checked it out asap ...I think the label of "torture doom" is a bit more accurate, pretty intense stuff. Another one of those things that you can only enjoy when you're in a certain mood, though. |

Check out the album by them called "Tomb Of The Ancient King" released in 2006. It is a underrated masterpiece. I did a review for metal-archives.com, I think its still up there but anyway, I need to put that on Doommantia. One of the most obscure but great bands of the genre.

Thanks for the recommendation Ed, a masterpiece indeed! Definetely one I'll be returning to next time I'm in the mood for something dark and intense.
I need some recommendations..I've really fell in love with the song "Curse Life" by Shape of Despair recently. Beautiful song in my opinion...I love the vocals, the tempo, and the use of the violin. Overall the atmosphere is very pretty, I think. It's a mixture of funeral doom, gothic doom and ambient...I can't find anything quite like it. Does anyone here have suggestions to songs/albums similar to this one?

| Eric-
'Angels of Distress', Shape of Despairs second album, started the sound that you liked. It's their second album and it's pretty good. My personal favorite is their first album 'Shades of...' as it's one of the most original Funeral Doom albums I've ever come across. You might also like Lethian Dreams. Currently I don't own any of their material but I'm planning on getting all of it when I have the funds. _________________ http://www.facebook.com/pages/Nevertanezra/163179627054889 http://www.myspace.com/nevertanezra http://www.youtube.com/user/NTNR1
