Bison B.C. - Dark Ages

Saw them live a few months back, they put on an incredibly tight high energy set.

Nice. They're on my list of bands to see and I've heard good things. Last time they came through Denver I couldn't make it.

Surprised you couldn't get in to them, Wyrenn, considering you're a High on Fire fan. I've seen the two bands compared quite often and I don't think the comparisons are too off the mark. But, to each his own.

I personally think they sound far more in the vein of Mastodon than High on Fire, but considering that High on Fire is an influence of Mastodon that fits too.

I definately hear the Mastodon in Bison B.C., not so much the High on Fire... and that's the thing, I just feel like I might as well be listening to Mastodon when I listen to them. The apple needed to fall a little bit farther from the tree for me.

Just finished spinning Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell. I always panned post-Sabotage era Sabbath, especially post-Ozzy Sabbath. I've been inspired to revisit after reading through the Sabbathism thread. Not as bad as I remember, and a lot of it is quite enjoyable, but it's not really Sabbath-y. Without Geezer's bass work I think the album would sound really ordinary.

Now playing: Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny. Damn, these guys were great in the 70's.

Judas priest were really awesome in 70s. Their career have always reminded me of Scorpions: both bands played similar style, both were awesome in 70s, in 80 they both became comercial and in 90s both bands have made some masterpieces and some not so good albums...

I don't agree that H&H album wouldn't work without Geezer, because Sabbath always had some good bassist. Of course Geezer is the best ( and he is the best bassist in the world), but the bass guitar had important role in Black Sabbath in 70s and at that time Geezer was irreplaceable. But in 80s and beyond 80s the bass guitar ( for Sabbath) became less prominent than in 70s, thus Geezer could be replaced. Also, most of the bass parts on the album was mostly written by someone ( I don't remember who was he; or did
Geoff Nicholls wrote the bass parts), except of Neon Knight.

I definitely agree that the bass is less prominent and even the drums are less dynamic. It's not that the album wouldn't work, it would just be more unremarkable. To my ears the bass drives the songs and make it more stimulating than it may be otherwise. This is, of course, if one overlooks the obvious presence of Dio's vocals. I've always dug his voice, but he's hit or miss as a lyricist. And I'm comparing it to the first six Sabbath albums. Most things would sound unremarkable compared to those.

Now Playing: The Gates of Slumber - The Wretch

Listening to the new Pallbearer now. Easily the best doom album of the year so far for me, absolutely phenomenal stuff. Truly a huge Warning-esque melancholy vibe to it, but mixed up with some great Sabbathian riffage Smile

I don't, but i admit it is not the best MDB album. It has some average song ( for MDB) some really good and the awful Heroin chick, which is the worst song that MDB have ever done

Nope, thanks for the recommendation Smile
The man has superb taste in music, has anyone heard any of his compilations that he did for Vice Magazine, or any of his DJ sets?
Loads of excellent proto-metal to be found there, definitely check it out if you haven't already (I believe I originally found those at the Sludge Swamp, probably due to Mari's admiration of all things Fenriz Razz)
