I love the Ghost. I love the record and they are really good live. I dont blame the band for being "hipster". Yes they are very "in" right now, and they bring out a lot of fans wearing right fitting plaid shits and jeans, but thats not their fault. Dark occultish 70s ish sounding stuff is in right now, but it could be much worse. Ill take it any day. Dont let the people who like Ghost dictate what they are, just a metal band.

No that does not make you a hipster, although tight plaid (not flannel) shirts and tight jeans seem to be the uniform of choice for the hipster tribe. Im sure you have seen it yourself at the shows you go to. Personally i dont give a crap about the hipster stuff, its a dopey reason to hate on people. I saw the poll, i thought id respond. Im no better than anyone else. In fact im sure im a lot worse. Now back to the topic, in my opinion Ghost are not a hipster band.

I've seen Ghost at a local metal festival last year. Just like the album it didn't do much for me. I can't really put a finger on what it is, but something is really off and it all sounds flat and average to me. Not a fan of the vocals either.
The funny thing is the band description on the festival guide even mentioned that they were "a mysterious band", and that we were" about to find out whether or not they were hyped for a reason".
They attracted one of the largest crowds that day, but I think I left after a song or 4. I don't hate them at all, but I don't see what the fuss is all about. Stage antics are a huge part of their appeal, I guess. I must admit they had one of the more impressive looking backdrops (huge stained glass windows), but I think the masks just look kind of silly, and the band's actual stage presence is a bit stale.

From the videos I have seen, they don't appear to have much stage presence at all and the singer has no charisma that I can see. Song wise, I have heard a lot worse but if I am in the mood for a 70's wannabee band, I would rather listen to Orchid, Devil or Noctum any-day.[/quote]

Ghost haven't "come out of nowhere". Their first release (The Elizabeth single) came out nearly two years ago. Their album came out in the second half of 2010.

It's no cynical marketing conspiracy - They're just really easy for journalists to write about, and magazine editors love them because they have an interesting visual element.

Their popularity has grown and grown and grown over the last two years. They had tons of fans before being put on magazine covers!

Interesting fact: before being signed to Rise Above, on their MySpace page they listed themselves as "Black Metal".

Sorry but I really hate Ghost with a passion. If you are going to do the occult image thing, at least have the music to match. Ghost sound like the Beatles to me, light and fluffy. I don't like them at all but I have no idea about the hipster debate.

I just had my first chance to hear them properly a few days ago and can't say I was too impressed. Just sound like a third-rate 70's rock band to me.

Gotta say I don't mind Ghost. But again, I consider them the finest example of my newly created genre of Scooby-Doo Metal.

Sorry Ghost is exactly the kind of band I hate the most.
