| Lets talk about them, the bands, the fans if you know any female doom fans. I would be curious to know about what you think is the typical female doom fan stereotype. I have noticed a trend among the girls that I have met in the flesh and online that are into doom but I am wondering if anyone else shares the same thoughts.
I must come clean up front, I am not much of a fan of female vocals in metal, never have been but I do like the girl from Blood Ceremony and the one from Wooden Stake.
What are you thoughts? Anyone? |

| There is probably not going to be a lot of discussion in this area apart from bands. Most dudes I know don't any female doom fans at all but I do know of a few online who have female doom fans as girlfriends and wives. The stereotype if there is one seems to be tattooed, wild, very sexually uninhibited women or the goth, occult witch type look. However I have met one or two that don't fit either of those so it is hard to say. And as you know Candy, I have always hung out with crazy, out-there kind of women, whether it be in their looks and body image or they are hippie type chicks.
For bands, there are not female doomsters I like either. Undersmile, Sophie from Alunah and the girl from Wooden Stake are really the only ones that really impress me. The rest I can take or leave. _________________ http://www.doommantia.com |

Yeah, I know where you are heading lol. The girls we know are all big-breasted models so obviously that is the people we know but I doubt if the regular metal fan meets too many women like us. I am not blowing my own trumpet either, it is just reality. As you know Ed, girls like myself and Sally can't go anywhere without getting stared at, chatted up or getting followed around and metal gigs are the worst. Most dudes I met are suprised when they find out I have a brain and I know my metal. I think the stereotype is metal chicks are dumb and only in it for the guys in the bands. I know some girls are like that but I think they are in the minority but I am betting most guys on here would disagree. |

| "The only true women of metal are gritty, apathetic, and far from glamorous". This is a quote from http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63616&page=6 - a metal forum thread. A pretty typical appraisal of women in metal I would think and of course it is utter bullshit.
I think there are a lot of great women in doom but like you I am picky over their voices, some cut it, but most don't.
As far as us chicks, you are right. I don't go to hardly any gigs anymore because of the creeps following me around. That might change now with Ed by my side but the environment for females at metal gigs is generally a unhealthy one and that is one of the big reasons people don't meet many female metal fans, especially doom metal fans. I know people are shocked when I tell them I like bands like Electric Wizard, first of all they say - who, what? The girls who I have played EW to and other doom bands look at me like I am a freak so it is a kind of a lonely world being a girl into metal. _________________ [sample: "You're all the same, the lot of you, with your long hair and][faggot clothes. | I can't add anything as far as female doom fans go as I don't know any. Any women metalheads I know are primarily into black metal which isn't my bag at all.
There are a few female singers of bands that I really dig including Blood Ceremony, The Wounded Kings, Dark Castle, and Subrosa (excluding the first album where I found the vocals to be a little grating).
For me, the two standout bands are Black Math Horseman and Windhand--their self titled is probably my favorite doom release of last year. Black Math Horseman's vocals are ethereal and really complement the music. Windhand's singer, Dorthia Cottrell, comes up with some powerful, emotional vocal melodies which really stand out in the tune "Winter Sun". Her vocals are also kind of buried in the mix a bit which puts a focus on the music. Again, the music and vocals complement each other perfectly. |

Sorry, I forgot about those bands. They are very good vocalists but I guess the problem is I don't spend much time on vocals at all. I love The Wounded Kings for example but right now I can't even remember what that woman sounds like. I am always absorbed by the guitars, bass, and drums and don't pay much attention to vocals._________________ [sample: "You're all the same, the lot of you, with your long hair and][faggot clothes. | I really enjoy doom with female vocals, I find it suits the music. Acid King - Busse Woods was one of the first doom cds I bought and up until that point I had only heard Saint Vitus, Electric Wizard and Goatsnake, so it was a nice change. Subrosa, Jex Thoth, Blood Ceremony, Serpentcult and Sabbath Assembly are the ones I like to most.
Unfortunately I find with a lot of metal bands that have female members, it comes of as more of a gimmick. "Look! A GIRL that plays metal!" Most people I've talked to about female singers only mention Arch Enemy and Nightwish, too bands I can't stand, horrible examples of women in metal. I always found when people would talk about Arch Enemy it would always be about how they still sounded good even with a female singer, It always struck me as kind of insulting. _________________ If I told myself again that I'm one of a kind, Would I have myself to blame if I was told a lie?

I don't like Arch Enemy but it seems like people admire that woman because and I quote "she growls like a man" so it becomes a sexist thing. There is also those listeners that tend to get into female-fronted bands, only if they are good looking. I knew a guy years ago who would get into any band that had a cute lead singer which I think is a lame excuse for getting into a band. Then there are those bands that attract fans purely for their sexual imagery, Nashville Pussy because the guitarist plays only wearing a bra onstage for example. The really talented females in metal bands that don't used their looks, body etc for attention tend to get ignored which is a shame._________________ http://www.doommantia.com |

Sadly that mentality still goes on. People will say about a band, the music is great but that singer is ugly - WTF does that have to do with enjoying the music? |

| Sadly i too know no female doom metal fans...nor female fans of metal in general. The women i know that listen to heavier (using this term lightly) stuff are into avenged sevenfold, disturbed, marilyn manson, deftones and occasionally slipknot. I once knew a chick who said she liked pantera only to find out that she really didn't like the music but just wanted to bang phil's brains out.
As far as female fronted doom metal bands i have listened to and enjoyed subrosa and blood ceremony but other than that i haven't been exposed to a whole lot. |

I haven't known too many doom metal fans in my lifetime, male or female so I am always all by myself on that score so the chances of me bumping into a female doom fan are a million to one. _________________ I've got a 12 ton demon on my back Whispering shit in my brain

I was like that for years, I was into doom metal for about 4 years before meeting another doom metal fan and it was another 8/9 years after that before I started meeting doom fans regularly. As far as female doom fans go, if it wasn't for my girlfriend, I wouldn't know any. Every female doomster I have met, I have met through her._________________ http://www.doommantia.com |

It is just such a male dominated scene that many women feel out of place trying to hang out with the guys. A lot of the time women get no respect, I know I have tried to strike up conversations with guys about doom and they just kind of snicker and walk away. |
